A closer look at the overdrive unit on the Spitfire overdrive gearbox, with the 1500 box behind it.

A series engined cars

For A series engined cars there are several ways to install an overdrive gearbox. The first is to use a Morris Marina/Ital bellhousing in order to fit the 1850 Dolomite or GT6 overdrive gearbox. The second is by fitting a Marina long input shaft to a 1500 Dolomite or Spitfire single rail overdrive box. If you want to fit the Triumph single rail gearbox – with or without an overdrive – to an A series (and it is NOT recommended), you need a long input shaft version (e.g.1850 Dolomite) or a swap from short to long input shaft, and a Marina/Ital engine back plate and bellhousing, which like the 1500 bellhousing is very heavy, being made of cast iron. A consequence of being forced to use the Marina/Ital bellhousing and engine back plate is that the starter motor position is specific to the larger Marina/Ital flywheel. An alternative would be to make your own hybrid engine back plate for use with the smaller Sprite/Midget flywheel, and thus starter location, but with the external pattern for the larger Marina/Ital bellhousing. While this conversion will always be difficult, it is slightly easier when using an A or A+ series engine and Sprite/Midget flywheel.
